That single change governs everything: unlike a French or Irish classmate, you need a long-stay student visa before you travel, you must validate it after arrival, you must renew a titre de séjour (residence permit) each year, you must prove sufficient funds and genuine study progress, and a refusal can be paired with an order to leave French territory. The good news is that the route is well mapped. The United Kingdom sits inside the Etudes en France online enrolment scheme, the student residence card gives a right to part-time work, registration with French health cover is free and compulsory, master’s graduates can stay on to look for a first job or start a business, and every refusal can be challenged before the administrative courts, which regularly annul prefectural decisions. This guide explains each step in the order you will meet it: the visa and the first permit, renewal and money, work and healthcare, the post-degree year, and the remedies when the administration says no, with the exact statutes and four recent court decisions that show how judges reason.

I. Which visa and which permit a British student needs to study in France

A. Do British students need a visa for France, and what is the Etudes en France route?

Yes. Since Brexit, a British citizen going to France to study needs a long-stay visa for studies, obtained from the French consulate before departure. Short visa-free stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period remain possible for tourism or a brief visit, but they do not authorise enrolment in a French university course or residence as a student. The visa you apply for is the long-stay visa marked for studies, which in most cases takes the form of a VLS-TS, meaning a visa de long séjour valant titre de séjour, a long-stay visa that itself acts as a residence permit during its first year once validated online after arrival.

The application runs through Campus France and, for the United Kingdom, through the Etudes en France procedure. France-Visas confirms that the United Kingdom is one of the countries covered by the EEF online enrolment scheme, alongside countries such as Armenia, Georgia, Turkey and Ukraine, and that the visa fee for EEF countries is 50 euros against 99 euros elsewhere. In practice this means a British applicant creates an Etudes en France file, submits the university acceptances, attends any required interview, and then applies for the visa. Check the enrolment conditions for your speciality and level on Campus France, because medicine and some other tracks have their own rules.

Two points decide most applications before they are even examined on the merits. First, the project must be coherent: a baccalaureate or A-levels followed by an admission that matches your background, with the tuition fees paid where required. Second, the money must be documented: service-public.fr states that you must be able to justify resources of at least 877.50 euros per month, assessed according to your personal situation, and that where several sources fund you, proof of each source must be attached. A parental undertaking alone, without bank evidence behind it, is routinely treated as insufficient, as the refusal decisions examined below confirm.

The residence logic starts at this stage. Under Article L. 412-1 of the CESEDA, the code on the entry and residence of foreigners and asylum, “la première délivrance d’une carte de séjour temporaire ou d’une carte de séjour pluriannuelle est subordonnée à la production par l’étranger du visa de long séjour mentionné aux 1° ou 2° de l’article L. 411-1”, which means the first issue of a temporary or multi-year residence card depends on producing the long-stay visa. Enter on a tourist stamp or a short-stay visa and the préfecture, the local state authority that issues permits, will normally refuse to regularise you as a student later, subject only to narrow statutory exceptions. Get the visa right and the rest of the stay becomes far simpler.

Within three months of arrival, you must validate the VLS-TS online and pay the issue fee that is added to the visa fee. This step is easily forgotten and costly to miss: without validation, the visa does not count as a residence permit, and later renewal applications start from a position of irregular stay. Keep the validation confirmation with your passport; prefectures ask for it at every renewal.

B. How do you renew the carte de séjour étudiant, and what funds must you show?

Renewal is applied for online, through the ANEF digital portal, in the months before the current permit expires. The governing provision is Article L. 422-1 of the CESEDA: “L’étranger qui établit qu’il suit un enseignement en France ou qu’il y fait des études et qui justifie disposer de moyens d’existence suffisants se voit délivrer une carte de séjour temporaire portant la mention ” étudiant ” d’une durée inférieure ou égale à un an.” In plain terms, a foreigner who shows that they are following a course of teaching or studies in France, and that they hold sufficient means of subsistence, is issued a temporary residence card marked “student” lasting up to one year. Renewal is not automatic: under Article L. 433-1 of the CESEDA, “le renouvellement de la carte de séjour temporaire ou pluriannuelle est subordonné à la preuve par le ressortissant étranger qu’il continue de remplir les conditions requises pour la délivrance de cette carte”, so each year you must prove again that the conditions are still met.

The file has three pillars. First, enrolment and results: certificates of registration, transcripts, and any diplomas obtained. Prefectures look for real progression, and courts do the same, as Part II shows. A student who repeats the same first year without explanation is exposed; a student who advances normally is protected. Second, resources: the 877.50 euros per month reference applies at renewal too, and every source must be evidenced. Third, a passport, proof of address in France, and the expiring permit. File early: a complete application filed before expiry normally yields a récépissé, a receipt that keeps your stay regular while the prefecture examines the file.

On money, one decision deserves close reading because it states the counting rules that still govern files today. In CAA Lyon, 23 February 2023, 22LY01950, available on Légifrance, a student challenged a prefect who had refused renewal for insufficient resources. The court recalled the then-applicable threshold, the monthly maintenance grant for French government scholarship holders, fixed at 615 euros by the order of 31 December 2002, and then laid down the method: “les revenus disponibles pour qu’un étudiant étranger subvienne à ses besoins doivent être appréciés sur la base du salaire net de cotisations, seul équivalent au revenu disponible, et rien ne fait obstacle à ce qu’y soient intégrés l’épargne personnelle disponible.” Wages count net of contributions, not gross, and available personal savings may be added. The applicant still lost, because 533 euros gross monthly wages, about 373 euros net, plus 2,778 euros of savings spread over twelve months, about 231.50 euros a month, stayed below 615 euros. The lesson for a British student is arithmetic: add net wages plus savings divided by twelve, compare with 877.50 euros today, and attach the bank statements that prove each figure. The condition is, in the court’s words, one “d’interprétation stricte”, of strict interpretation, so near misses fail.

Students who follow a European mobility programme should note that a parallel card exists, the temporary or multi-year card marked étudiant-programme de mobilité, governed by the same section of the code. And for the broader residence picture beyond studies, including which long-stay visa leads to which permit and how refusals and removal orders work across all categories, our guide to French long-stay visas and residence permits for British newcomers maps the whole system of which this student route is one branch.

II. Working, healthcare and graduation as a British student, then challenging a refusal

A. Can a British student work part-time, see a doctor, and stay on after the degree?

Yes to all three, within defined limits. On work, the student card itself carries the right: the same Article L. 422-1 provides that “Cette carte donne droit à l’exercice, à titre accessoire, d’une activité professionnelle salariée dans la limite de 60 % de la durée de travail annuelle.” The card authorises employed work as an accessory activity up to 60 percent of annual working time. France-Visas expresses the same ceiling in hours: the law authorises foreign students to work 964 hours, corresponding to 60 percent of normal working time in France. No separate work permit is needed inside that ceiling, but the work must remain secondary: France-Visas warns that part-time work will not cover all expenses and should be treated as a secondary source of income. Prefectures read heavy full-time employment as a signal that study is no longer the real purpose of the stay, and refusals on that ground survive judicial review when the transcripts confirm stagnation.

On healthcare, registration is free and compulsory. France-Visas states that registering for social security is free of charge and mandatory for all non-European students under 28, on the etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr site run by the health insurance system, and that on average the Sécurité sociale, the French social security system, reimburses 60 percent of medical costs, with student top-up cover, a mutuelle, making up the difference. The CPAM, the local health insurance fund, then issues the carte Vitale, the green smart card presented at every appointment and pharmacy. Behind this sits a universal guarantee: under Article L. 160-1 of the Social Security Code, “Toute personne travaillant ou, lorsqu’elle n’exerce pas d’activité professionnelle, résidant en France de manière stable et régulière bénéficie, en cas de maladie ou de maternité, de la prise en charge de ses frais de santé”, so anyone working, or otherwise residing in France in a stable and regular way, is covered for illness and maternity. This protection is called the PUMA, the protection universelle maladie, and a British student with a validated visa and enrolment meets the stability and regularity conditions through the student registration channel.

British students have one additional string to their bow for temporary needs. The UK government guidance on healthcare in France advises students to apply for a Student GHIC, a Global Health Insurance Card for students, which opens access to medically necessary state-provided healthcare for the whole study period on the same terms as a French citizen, with a valid Student EHIC remaining usable until it expires. The GHIC does not replace French student registration for a full academic year of residence, but it is the right instrument for medically necessary care during the study period and for travel, including visits back to the UK, where a French-registered student may separately hold a French EHIC for trips abroad.

After graduation, the code offers a bridge year. A British graduate holding health insurance, who held a student card and earned a master’s-level degree from an accredited institution, is therefore issued a one-year card for job-seeking or business creation, either to complete training through a first professional experience with no restriction to a single job or employer, or to pursue a business project in the field of study. This autorisation provisoire de séjour-style bridge, now codified as a temporary card, is the natural next step for a student who arrived on the route described in Part I.

B. How do you challenge a student visa or permit refusal and an OQTF?

Refusals come in two forms with two different judges’ doors. A visa refusal is issued by the consulate or, on administrative appeal, by the minister; the remedy runs to the commission de recours contre les décisions de refus de visa, the CRV, the appeal board for visa refusals sitting in Nantes, within two months, then to the administrative court of Nantes, which has exclusive jurisdiction over visa litigation. A prefectural refusal of issue or renewal of the permit is challenged before the local tribunal administratif, the administrative court, with appeal to the cour administrative d’appel, the administrative court of appeal. In both tracks, an OQTF, an obligation de quitter le territoire français, an order to leave French territory, may accompany the refusal, and it must be challenged within its own short deadline: 48 hours, 15 days or 30 days depending on the type of order, as service-public.fr explains. A lawyer is not compulsory before the administrative court, but the deadlines are strict and the file must be complete, because the judge rules on the evidence as it stood when the decision was taken.

The standard of review differs between the two doors, and two 2026 decisions show the contrast. For visas, review is confined to manifest error. In CAA Nantes, 31 March 2026, 25NT01455, available on Légifrance, the court recalled the framework of Directive 2016/801 on third-country nationals admitted for studies, including Article 20(2)(f), under which a Member State may reject an application where it “possède des preuves ou des motifs sérieux et objectifs pour établir que l’auteur de la demande souhaite séjourner sur son territoire à d’autres fins que celles pour lesquelles il demande son admission”, and the French implementing instruction of 4 July 2019. The court then stated the rule: “l’autorité administrative peut, le cas échéant, et sous le contrôle du juge de l’excès de pouvoir restreint à l’erreur manifeste, rejeter la demande de visa de long séjour pour effectuer des études en se fondant sur le défaut de caractère sérieux et cohérent des études envisagées, de nature à révéler que l’intéressé sollicite ce visa à d’autres fins que son projet d’études.” The applicant, admitted to a Paris cultural-production bachelor years after his 2014 baccalaureate with no explanation for the gap and weak French noted by the cultural cooperation service, failed to show a serious and coherent project, and the refusal survived. The court added that the board would have taken the same decision on that ground alone, and rejected the Article 8 private-life argument given the purpose of the visa sought. For a British applicant, the message is direct: align the course with your record, explain any gap year by year, and document French-language capacity where the course is taught in French.

For permit renewals, the judge examines the whole file and annuls where the balance is clearly wrong. In CAA Toulouse, 21 July 2026, 25TL00559, available on Légifrance, the prefect of Gard had refused renewal to a mathematics student and ordered him to leave within thirty days. The court found first- and second-year results validated with averages of 17/20 and 17.82/20, a third year validated with very high honours, admission to a general-mathematics third year at Montpellier, then admission to the ENS in Lyon: “L’ensemble de ces circonstances est de nature à établir l’excellence du parcours universitaire de M. A… et à attester du caractère réel et sérieux de ses études.” Given the coherence, seriousness and excellence of the record, “la décision du préfet du Gard de ne pas renouveler son titre de séjour portant la mention ” étudiant ” est, dans les circonstances particulières de l’espèce, entachée d’une erreur manifeste d’appréciation quant aux conséquences qu’il emporte sur sa situation personnelle.” The refusal, the departure order and the country-of-return designation were all annulled, with an order to the prefect to issue the student card within three months and an interim provisional authorisation. Excellence is not required of every student, but progression, attendance and coherence are, and a prefect who ignores them loses.

The mirror image confirms the same test. The applicant, enrolled as a non-degree auditor then in a first year of geography of which he validated only four of sixty credits, had completed no academic year in two years, and the medical difficulties invoked were neither grave nor explanatory. The prefect was entitled to take the repeated failure into account, and the refusal stood. On the accompanying departure order, the court applied Article L. 611-1 of the CESEDA, under which the authority may order a foreigner to leave, including where renewal of the permit has been refused, and Article L. 613-1 of the CESEDA, under which “La décision portant obligation de quitter le territoire français est motivée”, while “Dans le cas prévu au 3° de l’article L. 611-1, la décision portant obligation de quitter le territoire français n’a pas à faire l’objet d’une motivation distincte de celle de la décision relative au séjour”. Attack the refusal itself, because the departure order lawfully borrows its reasoning. The applicant’s health-protection plea under Article L. 611-3(9) failed for want of proof of exceptionally grave consequences and unavailable treatment at home. Note also Article L. 612-2 of the CESEDA: where the application was plainly unfounded or fraudulent, the administration “peut refuser d’accorder un délai de départ volontaire”, and a fraudulent student file can therefore produce an order with no voluntary-departure period at all.

Every one of these orders can be contested. A practical challenge file therefore contains: the refusal letter and any OQTF with proof of notification dates, to evidence the deadline; the complete prefectural or consular file as submitted, plus everything obtained since, because renewal legality is assessed on the facts at the decision date while new facts can support a fresh application; transcripts and attendance records proving real and serious study; net-wage slips and bank statements proving 877.50 euros a month from identified sources; and, where relevant, medical certificates of a gravity and unavailability meeting the statutory test. Administrative appeals to the prefect or the minister remain possible alongside court action, but they do not suspend removal, whereas a court application against an OQTF filed in time does in the cases the code provides.

Conclusion

A British student succeeds in France by treating the stay as a legal file from day one: the right long-stay visa through Etudes en France, validation of the VLS-TS within three months, yearly renewal proving genuine study progress and at least 877.50 euros a month in documented resources, part-time work kept within 60 percent of annual working time, health registration completed on arrival with the Student GHIC covering temporary needs, and the master’s-to-first-job bridge year claimed where available. The courts protect students who study seriously and count money honestly, annulling refusals that ignore strong records, and they uphold refusals where the project is incoherent, the funds undocumented or the transcripts empty. Keep every certificate, every payslip and every notification letter, diary every deadline from the day a decision arrives, and challenge a refusal that misreads your record, because the judge will read the whole file.

British student in France after Brexit: long-stay visa via Etudes en France, yearly permit renewal with 877.50 euros a month, 964 hours of work, health cover, the post-master bridge year, and how courts review refusals and removal orders.

[80312,80314

post-2135962","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-british-desk","category-decryptage
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v28.2 (Yoast SEO v28.2) -
